As we discussed in prior chapters; the element of storytelling is something very powerful in most cultures. Some of the most dominant storytellers of our time are those in the media. Despite the varying viewpoints of the role of media; we see that the way the media tells a story shapes its impact. In addition; the way individuals and organizations utilize media forums can be powerful.
As Ian Ross (2007:87) is cited within chapter 4 saying; “terrorism involves symbolic communication.” Communicating a specific message; to a specific audience is the focus. With this in mind; how do modern terrorist groups (like al Qaeda/ISIS, al Shabaab and Boko Haram) use the media to promote their goals? How does modern media impact the strength, development or failure of terror groups-specifically as its own weapon? What are the struggles that security forces have with modern media? Is media, “telling the story” important to disabling terror groups as well?
Finally; what is the Contagion Effect and please apply it to a current event issue which you see experiencing this effect.
