For the midterms, you will write a short essay.
The essay should be 4 to 5 pages, double-spaced, 12 pt, not counting illustrations. The deadline is at the end of the Spring Break.
Choose your favorite artist from any period that we have already covered—and analyze their works.
“Follow the pyramid”:
First, briefly explain the universal social and historical context of the specific period. (About 1/4 of the essay)
Then, discuss briefly the general characteristics of the particular period and/or style (e.g. Realism, Early Photography, Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, etc.). (About 1/4 of the essay)
Finally, describe the individual features of the artist’s style and bring examples of their specific works. Focus on the uniqueness of the pieces you chose.  (About 2/4 of the essay)
Use at least three solid art historical academic sources, in addition to Hauser or Stokstad.
