This is your case briefing assignment
Attached is a U.S. Supreme Court case Gideon v. Wainwright from 1963 reprinted from the West Publishing Co. Supreme Court Reporter. It is still good law. Read it. It is not very long. Then “brief” it using the format in the textbook on pp. 14-16. (These are uploaded documents) That is, put the name of the case at the top of the page. Below that, provide the citation where it is found in at least one Supreme Court reporter (for example “123 S.Ct. 456 (1998)”). Then provide me with a brief synopsis of the facts. (Label this paragraph “FACTS”). Label the next paragraph “ISSUE” and then write a short sentence or two stating the issue to be decided. Label the last paragraph “HOLDING” and write a short paragraph stating what the Court decided and its reasons for doing so. Generally, when there is more than one opinion in a case, the first one is the main majority opinion. It is followed by concurring opinions and dissenting opinions, if any. I am interested in the holding in the main majority opinion, though I would also welcome any discussion about any of the other opinions, if you want to address them.
